XT8 AImesh without being primary router

I don't need VLANs on my APs for now, I'll do somethign differently when I can wired both of them in the future. At that point, I might be looking at Ruckus Unleashed APs though. opnsense handles VLAN routing for me, as well as some other things, it's definitely not going anywhere lol.

XT8 AImesh without being primary router

I would very much love having VLAN capability, I wasn't aware of support for that in another model. Maybe I'll have to look into that.

XT8 AImesh without being primary router

Hey, works for me. I just need the wireless backhaul. I would be using MoCA but my adapters finally failed after many years, and I don't feel like investing the money there again. Pricey stuff.

XT8 AImesh without being primary router

So if I'm understanding correctly, set both to AP mode, and one can connect to the other wirelessly?

XT8 AImesh without being primary router

So in other words, AI Mesh doesn't exist outside router mode? I don't have the capability to use ethernet backhaul, I need the wireless backhaul function. From Asus' website (ignore the red boxes, I didn't make those): It would seem like that 2nd option, AP mode /AI Mesh router in AP mode...

XT8 AImesh without being primary router

I've been trying to get this setup for a bit now.. I've got 2 XT8's flashed with gnuton's firmware. I'm trying to get this setup as an AImesh network, due to not having ethernet backhaul capabilities currently. I'm unable to get the nodes to see each other and form the mesh. I've been through...

Release [FORK][DSL] GNUton's Merlin builds for DSL Router 386.1_2 released.

Just curious if anyone has tested this on the XT8 yet, and if so, how it went? I'd like to move away from 42095 from asus lol. I'm ok with doing some testing but I do need decent stability, two users here working from home now. Edit: for the XT8, do we use the firmware labeled RT-AX95Q? I...

Question: worth it just for access points?

It already handles routing, firewalls can route. It does all intervlan traffic, so i get the granularity of firewall rules instead of dealing with ACL's on my L3 switch. Easier to manage. Nice! Much more power efficient than mine lmao. Those Intel i350-T4 are hard to beat, i have several...

Question: worth it just for access points?

Indeed. In fact, the verizon router, when I was using it, gave decent signal from all the way in the basement... while I was on the top floor. They do go pretty far. Part of the reason I'm looking at options is that.. honestly, the way this house is built (wall layout in particular) and with...

Question: worth it just for access points?

Alright, I was looking at some TP-Link's but.. unsure about that, I'll keep looking around. Definitely already have the rest of my network healthily over-engineered. See my signature lol. Firewall has a quad core xeon and 16GB RAM :D and I'm in the process of running a port channel (only 2x...

Question: worth it just for access points?

Not even with Merlin eh? damn. well, there goes that plan I suppose.

Question: worth it just for access points?

oh, well.. I work with enterprise gear for a living, but I don't want that cloud licensing BS. and don't like anything from ubiquiti. SSID mapping to VLAN's (don't know what that's actually called, haven't worked with that yet), being able to ingest data for monitoring via SNMP would be nice for...

Question: worth it just for access points?

I'm currently running two XT8's for WiFi and the lack of stable firmware from ASUS above 42095 is pretty annoying, especially given the cost of those devices. Does anyone think it's better to run a couple of AX routers flashed to Merlin, just as wireless access points? I'm really considering...

    Best AiMesh configuration

Doesn't setting the wired backhaul up negate AiMesh though? I thought AiMesh was just wireless. I'm new to ASUS and still learning their stuff (for example, should have bought other things than the XT8 for merlin support...)
