Done. I sent the DS214 back to where it had been bought. I took a QNAP TS 269 Pro instead. It's 100 euros more expensive but that's peanuts for the company's budget. I got it to work in less than half an hour. This NAS seems to be more for professional use, the Synology DS214 more for personal... -

I tried connecting directly several times under different OS on different machines. The thing is the assistant does'nt go as far as giving the NAS an IP address. Although detected by the assistant (type, mac address, serial number etc...) it is never given the IP address. So no ping nor ipscan... -
