    Critique my DIY Build

I don't have too much experience in the NAS domain but I am building one myself. If you have time, I would suggest test each OS yourself. I've test UnRaid, FreeNas, Ubuntu and Windows 2k8 R2. Windows gave me the best performance in average for my config (2 disks EARS, Raid 1 software). I...

    Issue with Ubuntu and Iozone

I ran the test on the disk outside the raid array. Didn't have any trouble. I might stop my inestigation and just go with Win2k8 R2. It seems to have descent perf and is easier to manage for me. Thanks a lot for your help.

Windows server 2008 R2 - Odd Perf results

I've made some more tests with iozone. The perf counter only show about 106,000,000 bytes/sec max sent on my client which is roughly 100 MB/s. Not sure why iozone is showing such numbers...

Windows server 2008 R2 - Odd Perf results

Hello everyone, I'm building myself a NAS mostly to store all my data in one place. In addition, my girl-friend starting her business as a professional photographer, the disks on her machine is filling up pretty quickly. I mostly want my NAS to be small, low power consumption, upgradable and...

    Issue with Ubuntu and Iozone

I forgot to mention that I'm testing the raid1 on 2 WD Green EARS (with their new Advanced Format). It is a PAIN to work with, FreeNAS has terrible performance, with or without the jumper. Ubuntu seems ok with the jumper (except for that issue), UnRaid seems ok as well with jumpers. Didn't test...

    Issue with Ubuntu and Iozone

Thanks for the reply. No I am not using any security settings (not that I know off) on the samba share. I used the server version of Ubuntu 10.4. I'll try with a single disk without mdadm. I'll give it another try this week-end. In the meantime, I started testing with Win2k8 R2 on the NAS...

    Issue with Ubuntu and Iozone

Hello everyone, I recently assembled a small NAS and I am currently testing the performance with different solutions. I just tested Ubuntu with mdadm and Samba with Iozone. The issue happens when Iozone is writing a 2GB file. I get the following error: Error writing block 26066, fd= 3...

QNap/Synology/etc - RAID Software of Hardware?

QNap/Synology/etc - RAID Software or Hardware? Hello everyone, I'm starting to look for a NAS for myself and I was curious to know if the NASes from QNap/Synology/etc were using software or hardware RAID. Is there a difference in terms of reliability and performance between the two...
