    Need advice on VPN routers

I have 236.48 down and 24.04 up on my ethernet connection and 106.04 down and 23.89 up on my 5 GHz wireless connection. So upload speeds are about 10% of upload speed at the router and 25% on the wireless network.

When you're retired, you think about every dollar you spend and wonder if you can get by without spending it.

    Softether VPN

My first post in this forum - http://www.snbforums.com/threads/need-advice-on-vpn-routers.34672/ - discussed my need to find a vpn router. My needs are very simple. I am the only user. I need to connect remotely to view and manage one security cam. When I connect, no one will be using the...

That is a great price, but it's only 10/100. I need Gigabit, because my connection is 200 Mbps.

    Need advice on VPN routers

Well, of course, but I'd like to know how they can get around NAT and a firewall without the security guys knowing about it. I doubt you could have done that where I worked and gone undetected.

I read that and thought, really? Of course it wouldn't apply to what I'm doing, but I'd be interested to read the technical details that proves that their claims are true.

    Need advice on VPN routers

I found an open source vpn server that runs on Windows and does IPSec and L2TP. https://www.softether.org/ That should work fine for my needs. If I add more cameras in the future, I'll consider buying a purpose built device.

Thanks. iPhone 6 and/or Mac Powerbook (El Capitan), both of which can do PPTP, L2TP, IPSec and IKE. So there should not be a problem connecting to any reasonably standards compliant VPN device.

    Need advice on VPN routers

After tons of reading and research, I've decided to setup the built in PPTP VPN in my Windows 10 box IF I get the camera, and limit access to the camera's IP address. Thanks to @sfx2000 for reminding me to KISS. I changed the password to my 5GHz wireless network, which is running at 100 Mbps...

    Need advice on VPN routers

Those are getting kind of rich for my blood. Remember, I only need one VPN tunnel. Nobody but me will ever use it.

    Need advice on VPN routers

This is a bit of overkill, but the price is right and it has the bonus of a PoE port. Mikrotik RB2011iLS-IN 10 Ehternet Ports RouterBoard I'd have to familiarize myself with OpenVPN, but I don't think that would be a problem. Thanks for the tip.

    Need advice on VPN routers

I don't really need another wireless router, but OTOH, I wouldn't object to getting one if it's not too high priced. Do the new 802.11ac routers still have the 2.4GHz band? I have to have that for some of my older devices.

    True that. I'll keep looking.

    Need advice on VPN routers

Total newbie here. Just registered. I'm a retired computer security guy (edu), and I never setup any kind of network like a lot of my peers did. No server racks in my house. No switches. No Cat5E in the walls. Nothing. I have the TWC router (an Arris DG1670A) and a 2.4 and 5 GHz wireless...
