I'm not sure about that. The company I work for (not a huge company) will write off assets over 3 years, that includes $200 SANs. It may well impact the decision making process of smaller companies tho. rgds

I don't understand what business would buy a product that only has software raid - taking 8+ hours to rebuild an array if a disk dies; a cheap $1000 PC with hardware raid takes under one hour. To a busines, their data is their life. Seems odd to me.

I see QNap have just bought a Plus range of products out - faster Atoms, tho they've not updated the 8bay product. Sure, the 809Pro has a fast processor in it, but it also ommits SATA and Jumbo frames. Anyone like to hazzard a guess as to whether they will replace the 809 in the near future...

It's interesting that a lot of newly released NAS' use the same Atom, with very good performance figures, considerably better than devices using the older big brothers, such as the ReadyNAS Pro. I guess it'll mean that that featureset of the software is the differentiator as I'd expect...

Nice idea, but it should be done for registered users only for the reasons already cited. In my experience, this is the most common way, and I think it works well.

I have a slightly odd question for someone who has one of these products. Could you describe the network cable that comes with the router? The reason for this is that I bought a WNDR3700, and I need to send it back, so am looking to ensure I send back the right bits. I bought an ADSL modem...

No real reaon, just musing really. :-) But yes, USB3 would be interesting, in all sorts of applications.

How long do we think it'll be before NAS boxes that support SATA III drives (and obviously I don't just mean at SATA II speeds) start appearing?

Just found that there is a new firmware available (due to the check when you go into the admin pages). However, I've no idea what it fixes/adds, and if you go to the support pages (in the UK), the WNDR3700 is not listed. Has anyone in the UK tried the firmware update? rgds
