Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

Both routers came with a 2-year guarantee so I feel quite safe. The new setup has so far fulfilled my expectations: the hand-off inside the apartment is flawless and our WLAN internet radio has stopped dropping out. I have yet to test the hand-off performance on our terrace and will report back...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

After reading several threads more, and based on @Tech9's advice here, I have taken the plunge and ordered an RT-BE88U (as main router) and an RT-AX86U Pro (as an AP). I will probably be OK with stock FW and both are supported by Merlin 3006 in case I need more. I was able to score both used at...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

After reading comments here about the limited utility of and/or problems with WiFi 7 I am considering settling for AX routers, maybe ASUS RT-AX86U pro or ASUS RT-AX88U pro, both of which are supported by Merlin. I am particularly interested in Merlin's support for SNMP. Does this apply to...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

I take back what I said about Ubiquiti. It looks as though a pair of UDR7s would be an alternative to the BT8s. The higher end Ubiquiti routers (e.g. Dream Machine Pro) don't seem to be available in Switzerland, where I live.

What's the current "best" firmware for BT8/BE14000?

I was considering getting a couple of BT8s to get 6GHz and future-proof my network for a few years, but your reporting here scares me. In particular, I want ethernet-only backhaul. The usual remedy for ASUS firmware problems is to install Merlin, but BT8 isn't supported (yet).

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

Thanks again for all the useful information. Unfortunately the Ubiquiti devices don't have enough RJ45 ports for my purposes and I'm not enthusiastic about installing more switches, much less PoE. I'm doing pretty well with my antiquated setup, so based on your advice in this post (to another...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

Thanks for all your informative posts! It sounds as though I have misunderstood the purpose of mesh. All 3 of my routers / APs have wired Ethernet connections. Will I have any advantage from using mesh?

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

@Tech9 Many thanks for all the information! The stock firmware of my ASUS RT-AC68U has required a Trend Micro connection for a few years already, but after reading https://www.mbreviews.com/trend-micro-aiprotection-asus/ I am not worried about that. I also tend to prefer ASUS (Tawan) to both...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

After sifting through the ASUS website, it looks as though RT-BE58U would be a good match for my situation, but it isn't supported by Merlin. The nearest models supported by Merlin appear to be RT-BE86U, RT-BE88U and RT-BE92U, which cost about twice as much. Do I need to fork up the extra money...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

This is a home network. We have several WLAN-only clients and Ethernet doesn't cover our home completely. In particular we have a long terrace which requires 2 WiFi routers or APs for coverage due to a large concrete building core element which prevents coverage from a single point. I want AI...

Upgrade 3-Router WLAN with new ASUS routers

My current WLAN consists of 3 routers, including an ASUS RT-AC68U serving as gateway and DHCP server. It is daisy-chained to two older models from other vendors: cable modem | RT-AC68U (stock firmware) | old D-Link router (stock firmware) | older TP-Link router...
