In the routers settings there is a place where you can check for firm ware up dates and that's the first thing I check whenever there's a problem but it's up to date.
Whenever we do restart the router what we usually do is just in plug the router and the modem, and then plug them both back in about a minute later. I've tried resetting the router back to factory defaults a few times by it didn't fix anything.
