    Thank-you for the input :) so, in a one-drive scheme with simple backup as the fail-safe, would a single drive WD My Cloud be the most basic cost-effective solution ? barring performance or OS/app feature preferences from Synology or Qnap, etc.

    Looking for some advice or other things to think about from the learned community :-) I am currently running an Iomega/LenovoEMC StorCentre ix2-dl with two WD Red 3TB drives in RAID 1 (3TB of storage), with what was a 3TB external USB backup of the NAS -- backup drive has died.
