Have you enabled "Direct clients to redirect Internet traffic" when setting up the OpenVPN server on the router? If it's not enabled, then you may not stream through the VPN, but directly using the connection from wherever you currently are.

You could try using ForceBindIP to bind your torrent application to the VPN adapter (and thus routing its traffic through it).
