Why do I want to overcomplicate my Lan?

That thing about opposites is true. Horribly true for me being a bit of an it-nerd.

Why do I want to overcomplicate my Lan?

That is of course very relevant. One might think work computers have more security resources in a large organisation (we are 35.000, and maybe a few dozen within my IT spciality) but the protection is probably rather diluted and as an example I get a lot more spam and phishing mail via work than...

Why do I want to overcomplicate my Lan?

A single box? Sounds interesting. Care to elaborate? I like to do integrations on hardware to have, well, less hardware, to deal with. But in this area I am currently not merging any predefined roles (router/switch/ap/firewall) since I am still learning and I am not yet sure about what...

Why do I want to overcomplicate my Lan?

I can't disagree, but that is not enough reason for me to actually get hands on and do it. Rather know what I am doing and why. Sure, I have dedicated IP's for all my servers remote management (iBMC, ILO, IPMI) that are even tens on the segment but other than that I have no real reason to make...

Why do I want to overcomplicate my Lan?

So I am in no way new to networking, I have built my own Cat6 network, pulled my own cables, connected my own patch panels and all that. My equipment is pretty good with EdgeMax 6P Router, EdgeMax Switch and all my fixed devices connected to those via wall sockets I installed myself and...

    Solved RT-AC87U questions

Very interesting. While I am perhaps a week or so away from implementing my OPNSense combined Router and FW, I am keeping the Asus a while as AP, so perhaps well worth the "upgrade". Thanks @John35 .

    Solved RT-AC87U questions

Yeah, I know... been a while though... now I have to figure out OPNSense to eventually replace it :) Scanning these and other boards for info and impressions.

Actually an additional reset to factory settings did the trick. Must have missed something in the previous one...

    Solved RT-AC87U questions

Thanks Colin, No change to Merlin, worse security, noted. No, not using any VPN. Yes, that's the Asus FW I am on. 1. Yes. No import. 2. OK, trying that. The WAN DNS is , or should be, dynamically updated by ISP, but I can try those for a while. The WAN is Automatic, neither PPOE or PPTP or...

    Solved RT-AC87U questions

In addition to above I also have two bugs with default FW (latest). 1. WAN says no Internet connection, but all devices have Internet connection. 2. Clock is not working properly, despite attempts to correct it, even via CLI. I am hoping Merlin might be able to mitigate this?

    Solved RT-AC87U questions

I know you no longer support this device, but please read my post regardless.... originally this router handled my network a few years ago, but since the network grew and doubled the amount of devices, I bought a new cabled Router with way better performance and demoted the RT-AC87U to a WiFi...
