    ASUS Unveils RT-BE88U WiFi 7 Dual-Band Router

Based on the SoC specs, it should be fine either which way. It has one native multi-Gig PHY and three USXGMII interfaces, four Ethernet PHYs, plus four PCIe controllers and native USB. https://www.broadcom.com/products/wireless/wireless-lan-infrastructure/bcm4916

    Which OS, where to start

You can not install a third party OS on most pre-built NAS devices. QNAP (and others) rely on a USB DOM which contains a compressed image of the OS. At first boot, this is extracted and installed onto a partition on one of the hard drives that you've installed in your NAS. As these devices have...

    802.11be the cheap way.... <$40

I take it that you're aware that client WiFi solutions aren't really suitable for APs? There's a reason why there are AP and client specific WiFi solutions. Then again, if you don't care about range or being able to connect more than a couple of clients, then I guess you're fine.

ASUS GT AX6000 Reset to default settings unexpectedly

Yes, you can flash whatever firmware you want. It's odd that it updated, as Asus' latest firmware is still from the end of June 2023.

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

Yeah, they just changed the name though. Yeah, I was talking to an Intel disty about using one of the upcoming chips in a project and it just got delayed and delayed and... At least they sold it, rather than just killing it, like so many other companies do. They made a huge loss though. $345...

Well, there was that too and if didn't deliver in terms of promise WiFi performance either.

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

Nah, they have a license to use some Atom cores, weirdly enough. https://www.maxlinear.com/anywan

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

That's at least good news, as whatever my cable ISP provided in Taiwan was... outdated to say the least. I also got a crappy old 802.11ac router included with the service I had in my previous place here in Sweden and it was so locked down, you couldn't even change the WiFi channel... It also had...

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

I think this has something to do with Intel selling the entire BU to MaxLinear.

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

Well, I can only agree with you here, it's a missed opportunity for Asus and I have zero insight into what's going on. Might take your advice and send their support an email though.

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

Cable and xDLS modems are fairly basic, but yes, the can be hacked, but as long as it's just a "dumb" modem, it's less of a threat, as they're harder to hack compared to most consumer routers. Obviously combined modem/routers are terrible and I would ask any ISP that provides one of those to put...

Asus moving some devices to EOL while issues still remain

Well, I don't disagree with you here, but I also try my very best to avoid brands that drop their products like a hot turd after a year or two, when possible. My TV is a 2021 model that is still getting regular updates (also, it wasn't anywhere near $1000), my phone is a Pixel 6 that is getting...
