Installing pihole directly on asus router

    1. Install the Tar.gz for pihole v4.4 and unzip it. 2. once inside the pihole v4.4 directory you should be able to use the manual install command. Now after pihole is installed you will see an FTL error. That is fine. sudo bash basic-install.sh 3. After that is all done type the curl command...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

Ideally yes it would. The goal of this project was more around the idea of "because I can" type philosophy. I hope that down the road it will be possible to make a script for all of this, but most likely that will only become a thing on newer devices that have kernel v4 (more compatibility and...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

Sorry for the late reply 1. Install pihole first will be best since you can have pihole running without unbound and later see if you can get pihole to point to the unbound address. Also I wrote about earlier issues with stubby when the router reboots see previous posts about this. Not sure how...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

Update for Pihole v5.0. Read their blog post for list of improvements and changes. Due to issues with installing pihole v5.0 I decided to add a post providing the current issues and ways to get around it. Both of these issues will most likely be fixed in later updates? 1. (Issue with...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

Ignore this do what @Jack Yaz said Not entirely sure. I know that stubby entware works (with the slight downside of a reboot issue. check previous post ). The way I currently have things set up is that the router DHCP pushes everything to pihole. Pihole then filters out ads and pushes it to...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

Beyond what spanjap said the only other thing I will bring up is that this might not work in future updates of pihole. While it should unless major changes are being made I can't guarantee that it always will. Right now 4.3.1 works pretty well. I even managed to block a large chunk of YouTube...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

Pihole should have a different ip. For example my router is at 192.168.1.1 and pihole is 192.168.1.2 Also make sure that the second ip address pihole asks for is the default gateway address. For more information check one of the previous posts I replied on. It went into detail on the rest of the...

Just for diagnostic purposes what happens when you change back dnsmasq to port 53. If you do this pihole should be up and running still. Then try disconnecting and reconnecting a device. Also for clarification what do you mean by "The DNS isn't working anymore on that device"

Installing pihole directly on asus router

While I managed to get stubby to fully run with pihole it has an issue when the router reboots. This appears to be the result of ntp not syncing up. fake-hwclock might solve this problem, but I would need to do some trial and error with this. This may not be the same for unbound ? If anyone has...

It looks like dnsmasq isn't running because avahi-daemon is taking that port up. Try changing back dnsmasq to port 53. Since Pihole is already running it should stay up with dnsmasq running. Here is what it looks like for me.

Installing pihole directly on asus router

You shouldn't have to change dnsmasq at all. Can you show me what pops up when you type netstat -nltup | grep 'Proto\|:53 \|:67 \|:80 \|:5353 \|:5453 \|:8093'

Installing pihole directly on asus router

FTLDNS is limited in its compatibility, but you have the option to compile it yourself. This may or may not work. This is why I kept wheezy in there, because according to some people on pihole forms they managed to get it to work on something that old. As far as my router goes I had to compile...

Installing pihole directly on asus router

I will have to look into that when I get off in an hour or so. The other way that should work is by following this sudo -s cd / wget -O basic-install.sh https://install.pi-hole.net sudo bash basic-install.sh --i_do_not_follow_recommendations
