I just pulled the trigger on the DL-WRX36. The price point (59.99us) is good vs. the GL-MT6000 (159.99us) or even the RT-AX86U Pro (184.63us) on Amazon.
I like the claim @Vexed made that if you wanted to "slot in a MediaTek [WIFI 7] USB adapter" in the future, that particular router allows...
I like the DL-WRX36 and on Amazon it has such a nice Price point ($59.99us) for a WiFi 6 router:

And with OpenWRT support, kewl:

That would make it less...
After 28 days 23 hours of continuous use both my AC86U and my 2 AC68U's are running 386.14_2 flawlessly (after a dirty upgrade) as far as I can tell, in my current configuration, as per my signature below.
I have gone TAB to TAB through both my AC86U and the AC68U running on my LAN side...
Well that's cooling my enthusiasm.
I haven't been following the threads like I used to, but I do now seem to recall that some were thinking about bypassing the AX86U for the AX88U for that exact reason. The AX88U was on the Merlin 3006.
The 3006 support and it's price is what I was looking at... Maybe look a bit deeper in US for better price.
ADD: That does seem to be the best price I can find in US. Several online vendors offer it at that same price in US so nothing special.
Cyber Monday Sale. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-RT-AX86...cription-Free/dp/B0BQ417K47/?tag=snbforums-20. seems like a good price. Thinking about pulling the trigger.
I am currently viewing a source that claims that a clever hacker has (already) provided a hack (for a $5000 price--negotiable) using already known vulnerabilities in (unpatched) enterprise and consumer-grade routers to make the claim of "...physical proximity is needed." not quite true.

You haven't mentioned if you have tried to set up a VPN client on another device, just your iPhone. Do you have another device (another phone, laptop, tablet) that you can try to set up as a VPN client? Perhaps, the problem isn't with the VPN server or configuration -- maybe it's with some...
Did you hit the proper radio button [ LAN only] [Internet only] [Both] when you configured the VPN? I know personally I was troubleshooting my VPN. It showed I was connected to the VPN but I couldn't access anything on the internet. Turns out that I had enabled [LAN only]
I have never used that feature but tried it just today and it worked for me.
Perhaps your flash for the new firmware was buggy? Did you do a "dirty" upgrade (directly flashed the new firmware over the old firmware/settings/USB flash drive?
I had been doing "dirty" upgrade(s) from several...
Yes, method similar to post #16 (carefully following @ironclad's method from Post #60) is what I was using with earlier Merlin versions from a few years ago. Never confirmed over the years if the overclocking was still working.
It has been years since "I set it and forgot it" (and it worked)...
I know this is an old thread, but it always seemed to me that as long as the subject matter is relevant, this would provide a better, more informative way to cover a subject than endlessly starting new related threads. If I'm wrong, I will gladly change my thinking.
Recently while playing...
I am using my RT-AC86U as my primary router. No AiMesh. Running AiProtection, VPN Server.
Did a "Dirty" upgrade of my RT-AC86U from 386.12_6 (working fine) to 386.13 Beta (working fine) a few days ago.
Began opening Menu items and seeing what they show and render...
When I open WAN >> NAT...
