You should be aware though that the total bandwidth might be limited by your router's processor power.
Also it depends on how many simultaneous connections your VPN provider allows.

There are many people that still access their NAS over a 100Mb/s network, they never will reach these speeds ;)
Instead of Samba (SMB) you could try if copying your files though FTP would be a solution.
As I am using Mac, which has crippled SMB, I use FTP 99% of the time to copy data.
Try to put the router in a central location closer to the area where you need a stronger signal.
If the signal strength of European router models is really less, then your only option seems to be getting a US model..
