    What I am doing is setup VPN with the Asus router. Either in the iPhone, iPad, I would use Mocha RDP to wake up my PC or NAS. As long as you have the VPN established, you should be able to use any WOL app or from the router's website. Just make sure your WOL work internal first.

    Updated to the latest firmware, V1.0.2.120_1.0.17. Doubt it has anything to do with USB but it can't hurt. Also, I changed the mode to AP instead of router.     When I get a chance, I am going to try with a SSD in a 2.5" enclosure. Also, a flash drive. Neither one should consume much power from the USB port.

    It's powered by USB. If it's lacking power, I should only lose the drive, not crash the whole router. There is no Windows OS involved. Strictly the router and the WD TV Live media player. The WD device can access the videos via DLNA or network share from the R7000.
