    I plan on implementing this in stages. I'll upgrade to a pfSense router and make the
    ASUS RT-AC86U an AP only. Then one day I may update the wifi portion.

    Thanks for the advice, it's great to bounce things off of others who have done this before.

    I have an Asus RT-AC86U and have been running it with Merlin for over a year now and agree it is a beast but I want to run OpenVPN through the router and the Asus RT-AC86U can't handle the traffic and so it brings my 200 Mbps down to 50 and it kills my set-top boxes, etc.

    From your message below, it appears you have the RT-AC68U and not the RT-AC86U which just hit the US market earlier this month. The new and improved RT-AC86U has OpenSSL hardware acceleration and is capable of 200/200 Mbps, hence all the hub-bub. Your old RT-AC68U is capable of maybe 40/10 Mbps.

    I am looking to build a pfSense router and get the UAC-AP-LITE from Ubiquiti and wanted here your take on that idea. PCEngines sells parts and I can get a decent router built for $168.00

    pfSense is great if you are willing to spend the money on a box that has Intel NICs and an x86 CPU that supports AES-NI like this unit here: http://a.co/anpZi40

    The UAC-AP-Lite uses an old 775 MHz MIPS Atheros ARM chip which is outdated and slow. If you plan on running a VPN server or client, you'll be sorely disappointed. I wouldn't waste my money on it if I were you.

    Merlin's AsusWRT fork is now in Beta and very stable as far as the VPN goes. The Asus RT-AC86U is $200. I wouldn't let the Senior folks discourage you from buying one. They're great routers. Plus there are a ton of people on the SNB forum that'll help you set it up, me included. But if you really need Gigabit VPN speeds, then pfSense with Intel chips is the way to go.
