2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands with same SSID?

New Around Here
Is it recommended to create parallel wireless networks with the same SSID for both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, so that devices can pick whichever network offers the best connectivity? Or should those networks get different SSIDs instead? (In the latter case, would devices recognize which one is "better" and connect to that one - assuming the device has previously connected to both networks?)

No. Clients are pretty stupid and will grab the first SSID they see that they have credentials for.

Use unique SSIDs so that you can control which band to connect clients to.

Depends on the client - some are better than others..

Try both ways, see what works...
