New Around Here
I'm on factory firmware since 2016.

AC-88U's 5ghz just turned off and 2.4ghz is now running at download speed of 2.84Mbps and upload speed of 0.92Mbps despite me being just beside the router; on a 1gbps unlimited plan.

Have tried to restart Optical Network Terminal & router to no avail.

RT-AC88U with 8 Ports?

Are you using all 8 LAN ports?

Are the Ports you're using Ports 5-8? See if using only Ports 1-4 makes a difference.

Of course, you will need to do some things to your router first.

Try an electrical reset (see link above).

Perform a full reset on the router using the appropriate method for your model from the link above.

Using the links above (if needed), perform a minimal and manual configuration of your router after you have fully reset it. Do not import any saved backup config file. Do not plug in any USB drive that was previously used for amtm/scripts.

Be sure you test the radios at each stage and keep testing them with each configuration change you perform. After each change, be sure you are rebooting the router to test/ensure that it keeps working as expected and the settings you change, 'stick'.

If after doing the above (and possibly, attempting the Nuclear Reset in the links above) the router still shows no signs of usable RF in the two bands, I would be comfortable knowing it was a hardware issue. Time for a new router then.
