I have a <1000 sq ft apartment all on one level. Right now I have an Arris Surfboard SB6141 modem with a wired connection to my computer. I was thinking about buying a television and could also use wireless for my smartphone and whatever other devices I choose to buy. My download speeds are a mere 25mbps unless I upgrade my internet plan for more money. My ISP is Spectrum, formerly Time Warner. It's the only game in town in my city. So what kind of router would you recommend? Down the road (if I'm alive) I'll probably upgrade the router if needed so I can get that DFS thingamabob. And an Orbi. But it's overkill for now.

Your "needs" are pretty basic. I would suggest defining your budget first. Just about any basic "N" or "AC" combo router will serve your immediate needs. My personal vote would be in the Asus product line....only because I have had fairly good luck with them. There are plenty of other decent brands and options out there. I don't know enough about the exact models currently on the market to suggest a specific one.

I think you should go for Netgear Nightwalk AC1900, Simply a great one. I am myself using it in my house (3000sq. ft) from the last 3 months and it will definitely serves you all that things you are looking for. During the research before buying, i have gone through many reviews and all.

Now my house has become my second office and a gaming hub for my son :)

I agree with that. User interface and traffic monitor move Asus towards front of the line. Merlin is a gr8 add on.
