86u issues

I am running a 86u on merlin current software. I am having some crazy cpu usage when using the download master on it also take forever for downloads to complete. It's also the second router in a dual router set up. Also it's my dedicated vpn server. Wanted to use it for the internet speed via the vpn. My 88u is the main running stock firmware. Is there something I need to do on the 88u end to improve this or is the 86u not good to use as a Download master. Cause some how the download2 folder on the drive connected to the 88u wont installed download master on it anymore.

What do you mean by current software?
What do you mean by second router?
Have you tried to format the drive on the AC88U?

@bbunge 86u is running merlin 384.19. It's my dedicated vpn router. And trying to download from it take forever.
88u is running current firmware 3.0.0.4.385_20630 and is the main router in the network. The 86u is connect via lan(88u) to wan(86u). Is the 88u causing the slow/hold up. Formatting the drive after I move everything over off of it. And apparently the 88u or 86u cant read 8TB drive.
