I turned my Asus rtac86u off yesterday morning for a hard reboot. After coming back online. I noticed the 5ghz band was not broadcasting at all. (Could not even locate it with wifi scanning tools). I proceeded to reboot the device again. Same result.
I proceeded to reinstall the current Asus firmware with a hard reset using the WPS button. After reconfiguring I was presented with much the same. Did the same with the most current Merlin firmware and came up with the same result.
Tried other things such as leaving it unplugged after a hard reset for a few minutes but nothing helped. After some fiddling I can get the 5ghz to work but only on channel 149 or higher. I know some regions are restricted but 36-48 should and always has worked here in the US.
Is it possible there is an issue with the hardware that would only affect those channels?

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

How are you determining which channels are active?

Have you tried more than one client device. Since the problem is common to two different routers, it could be the device.

I have about 15 devices that I connect to the 5ghz band in my home. None can even see the network. Also does not show up as even existing on wifi scanner.

What do you see under the 5 GHz section of the router's System Log > Wireless Log page?

I just changed it to auto, put itself on channel 44.. wifi is gone now.

Strange. Your log shows a device connected to the 5GHz channel:

It actually did show up for a few seconds when i changed it to auto, it doesn't show up on wifi scanner now.

Were there any useful messages in System Log > General Log at the time it disappeared.

Where is the router located? Are you in a densely crowded Wi-Fi space?

Was the router ever fully reset via the WPS method, after flashing the latest firmware?

Where was it purchased? What is the manufacturing location?

There is only 1 5ghz wifi other than mine that's in range.

Yes the router was reset with wps after I reinstalled the asus fw and the merlin.

Was purchased in 2018 on Amazon.

Production year: 2018

Made in China

2018 RT-AC86U? Yes, that may be a hardware issue.

You must reset after flashing the firmware you want to use.

They were reset afterwards. I worded that odd sorry.

I figured it was a hardware issue as well but if you read my second post I purchased a Ax86u today and it literally did the exact same thing so I'm clueless now.

How long are you waiting for the 5GHz band to show?

Have you tested with the latest RMerlin VPN Director Alphas?

If it's on channel 36-48 it doesn't come on after any period of time.

No, honestly not sure what that is.
