Hi all.

After lots of reading, the DS413 seems to do what I want:
RAID5, 24/7 operation, resource management utilities, remote security, etc.
The box needs to be stable/ robust/ and smart enough to maintain the system - so it will keep working well years later.
VPN server is also nice to have.
It will be for home/small office use - so I don't care about complex network domains.

Before I make the dive, are there any other NAS boxes I should consider?
QNAP, WD, Icy Dock, Netgear, etc.
I was hoping for hardware RAID, but those usually come with a higher power/watt CPU & mainboard. I'll rather have a very low watt idle state.

any ideas?
thanks!

I researched all NASes to death, and it came to Synology vs. QNAP. Needing only 2 drives and wanting USB3 not eSATA for backups, and after trying the on-line demos, looking at prices, I chose Synology. But either would be better than mass-marketed carp.

These two companies do one thing well, unlike, say, Netgear.

Thanks for the post!

Yes,
I am looking for something serious. You know a REAL computer inside the little box for doing REAL work in a 24/7 environment.

Researching was diffiicult because it often came down to apples vs. oranges - which is better?
I also narrow down to Synology vs QNAP. The Synology seems focused more on home use and the QNAP on large business use.

The DS413 has a 3w hibernation/standby mode which is what I'm looking for.

Ok, it seems I'll just stick with the Synology..

Check out Thecus 4-bay N4800. The new UI paired with the Intel CPU suits your needs.
