Any benefit to upgrade from RT-AC68P?

I'm using a RT-AC68P running Merlin's firmware. It's a few years old now, but works fine. I see there are some new Asus routers on the market, including the intriguing looking RT-AC5300, but it's not clear to me if I would realize any actual performance or stability benefits if I were to upgrade.

Any thoughts? My clients are a mix of modern Windows laptops with AC clients, and newer iOS/Android (iPhone 6s, iPad Pros, Galaxy S8) devices. Is there value to an upgrade or is it just a waste of $$$.

I had a AC3100 for a while. Wireless range and performance "seemed" slightly better but not worth the additional cost. One reason that I would recommend upgrading is if you use the VPN client or server on the router. The extra cpu horsepower of the AC3100 (or 88U or AC5300) will bump the throughput around 50%.
