I tried to google this, but found no good answer.

Is the Apple TV wifi "better" than connecting it via lan cable to a XT8?

The Apple TV is in a very tight space, so I rather not disturb it unless there's gains to be had.

LAN cable is better. I connect my Nvidia Shield to XT8 and get 500Mbps speed on it.

If you can, wire it. It will connect at the client port's max link rate, so as good as they need it, and it will be a robust, full-duplex connection vs. WiFi which is half-duplex and time shared with all other wireless comms on the same frequencies. This will also lighten the burden on your WLAN, allowing your other wireless clients better access and response. And when your WiFi gets dodgy like it can, your Ethernet clients will still be humming along with 99.9999% uptime.

LAN will have better performance/stability than WiFi.

That said, I have hardly ever seen any stuttering when watching Apple TV (HD, not 4K) over WiFi.

Depends on your use case. Most things you can do with Wi-Fi, you can do with cable. You get better experience with cable in some cases:
Use Apple TV as a Home Hub;
Use Apple TV to stream high bitrate content from home servers.

However there's also a drawback with cable: when the XT8 that ATV connects to freezes, the ATV will lose connection. If you're using Wi-Fi, ATV wil automatically switch to next available node if it's within range.

All good points. I can stream 4K from NAS without issue as it is now, I'll think about it.
