Asus 2.4Ghz (poor) vs 5Ghz peformance

WMar

Occasional Visitor
From time to time, I found my 2.4Ghz performance is much lower than 5.Ghz in my AiMesh setup. I used the Speedtest app from the iphone to perform the test which is about.

5Ghz ~ 500Mbps & 4ms latency
2.4Ghz ~ 10-15Mbps & 25-50ms latency

Anyone have any ideas how to optimized the performance for 2.4Ghz? All my AiMesh node are connected via ethernet port. Thanks

What is your main router? What nodes are you using? What firmware do they run?

How are you testing?

What are your ISP speeds?

How does the main router perform on these tests, when the nodes are turned off?

Normally, 2.4GHz Band speeds are worse than the 5GHz Band speeds. What are your expectations here?

Realistic expectations with somewhat clear Wi-Fi environment:

2.4GHz band, 20MHz channel, 2-stream client - N ~90Mbps, AX ~200Mbps
5GHz band, 40(N)/80MHz channel, 2-stream client - N ~200Mbps, AC ~500Mbps, AX ~800Mbps

Main router : GT-AXE10000
Mesh node : RT-AX86U, RT-AC5300
All latest firmware…

ISP : 1Gbps
Tested in RT-AX86U node

It seems the 2.4Ghz performance and stability issues. I remember that it was able to support 200mbps and similar latency as 5Ghz before Aimesh….

Wired, wireless backhaul? I really hope it's wired - crazy mix of different generation and radios routers. One is like e-waste already.

Latest firmware means nothing. Latest Asus, Merlin, beta or something else? Version number please.
And the AC5300 as a mesh node will limit what the newer devices can do.

ASUSWRT - Official forum, perhaps all on latest available stock firmware. This doesn't change the fact @WMar has 8x radios on different bands and different generation, whatever is matching is on the same channels, there may a change in Wi-Fi environment, etc. A lot of "meshing" is happening there.

It is connecting via Ethernet lan cable…what is your recommendation? I had tried to remove the AC5300…I always to use the latest model as Main Router but it isn’t closed to my Living room and bedroom at All.

It is all lastest Asus firmware from asus site…not Merlin

This mix and match won't go very far. Newer Asus models run 3.0.0.6 firmware with features not available in 3.0.0.4 or older firmware. AiMesh works best with identical units on the same firmware and with wired backhaul. If you need better system and want to stay with Asus - sell whatever you have, replace with 2-3 newer models. I don't know why you have tri-band routers. Dual-band is what you need with wired backhaul unless you have some special use for the extra radios like dedicated to high-bandwidth VR set. Asus claims AiMesh compatibility on everything, but the reality is different.

Agree. The router becomes more complicated nowadays to get the full performance...
