ASUS BE96U Wifi Module Crashing When Log File Fills Up

There is a huge issue with the log reaching capacity. Instead of doing write over when the log fills up it just kills the wifi modules and requires a manual restart. This is only present in the Merlin and Gunton version because it lets you change log level. I have mine set to Warning / Warning and it lets the router work for longer periods of time. If I turn off the log completely there is never an issue. However, this specifically appears to be different and I'm not sure what happened this morning. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Started at 8:19 AM EST and I got four log entries per milisecond until 8:44 AM EST when the wifi module crashed.

Check your router's ntp setting, especially regarding DST. Try different ntp servers.

Thanks! That's the first thing I did. This is not the first time I have seen NTP failures in my logging. Even pool.ntp.org was failing to provide NTP on router boot up. I have switched out to some different servers, again.

I also am using a small ubuntu server to run AdGuardHome, so for good measure I went in there and updated it to the same time servers. I'm not pointing my router to my AdGuardHome as a time server but I'm wondering if something is getting too far out of sync and loses communication. I didn't have this issue on my XT8s or my older ASUS Mesh AP I'm using. I also find it weird that the NTP times I have on my network are like 2-3 min different than my works enterprise servers. Anyways that's just some background but this is related to the current released version of Merlin as NTP doesn't have issues on the stock firmware. The stock firmware has the log issue where it locks up ONLY if you dirty flash from Merlin to Stock with your log level set too verbose.

What's the default log settings and when was the last time you reset?

To be honest I'm finding the 3006 branch of Merlin firmware extremely stable - but different hardware. So I can't test anything I suggest.

I don't remember off hand what the defaults were. I will have to do a full reset to check that. As for the last time I reset it. about 1.5 months ago I wiped the whole thing clean and set up my network fresh on the Merlin firmware. I tried the new ASUS firmware, and that, when I was using it, crashed about every 1-2 hours and found it was related to logging. Factory defaults even didn't work to fix the issue so I reinstalled Merlin and did a fresh wipe. That's also when I set my log level to warning / warning and all has been stable since then. Today was the third time I have seen mention of NTP issues in logging but today is the first time it straight up crashed the wifi. When I went to the router itself the wifi modules for 5/6 Ghz were down and no led with 2.4 Ghz the only wifi module still working and had an led. Only way to fix it at this point is to manually cycle the power.

I could try the alpha but I work from home so I need the internet to be stable. I see you are using it and you're saying its stable. Depending on in put here I might have to give it a go this afternoon after I get off.

I don’t see any connection between NTP and these error messages. dst in the log refers to “destination”, not “Daylight Saving Time”. The fact that your router must reboot and reset the clock doesn’t imply an NTP issue either.

Regarding the thread that I linked to - use of the filters in the syslog server config would be different to the method we used for syslog-ng?

I think the “BE” in the router name stands for “BETA”…all these proprietary Broadcom components need work.

THERE IS NO MERLIN ALPHA 3006 FOR THE 92U you are stuck with not ready for prime time Asus FW

Ideleted when I realized it was the 96 , still say Merlin Alpha or beta is still better than stock Asus FW at least that has been my experience over the last 13 years . I tried the Asus =release FW for my 1100 pro a few months back and it was a disaster tjhe 2nd Merlin Alpha release has been rock solid so far .

Only if you tick the box labeled "Initialize all the settings, and clear all the data log for AiProtection, Traffic Analyzer, and Web History."
