ASUS command line ping does not work for packet size >88 bytes

I was attempting to use my ASUS routers to do some WAN MTU testing, and I eventually realized that when issuing a ping command from the router to the usual places (e.g., 8.8.4.4) with a packet size of >88 bytes, the ping would fail even when don't fragment is disabled. Anyone know why this is happening?
