Asus firmware to Merlin firmware upgrade instructions

Hi,

ASUS RT-AC87U with factory firmware 3.0.0.4.380_7743

I would like to use Merlin because of the policy rules. My IP cam's are not accessible over 4G when I turn on PIA OpenVPN client on my router. So I want camera streams to run over normal WAN (https) and all the other traffic through VPN.

I've been searching forums, YouTube etc for upgrade instructions, and it all seems very basic. However, I can't find any information on which settings are kept during upgrade, and which are lost.

For example, I use a non-standard default gateway. Does Merlin leave the default gateway intact, or do I need to enable DHCP on all devices before upgrade?

Is there some sort of "technical" upgrade instructions that cover all aspects of the Merlin upgrade?

Going from stock Asus to Merlin all settings should be persevered. I suppose it's possible that the odd setting might be lost for some esoteric reason but even so that can be corrected later. No features (like your non-standard gateway) are removed, only extra features are added.
