ASUS GT-AXE16000 Update to latest Merlin Firmware not working

My ASUS GT-AXE16000 is currently running Merlin 3004.388.8_4 and has been ever since it was released. I have always used Merlin Firmware from the day I bought the Router in September 2023. Firmware updates always went smoothly and were all trouble free, as they were on my previous AC-5300GT.

However the update to 3006.102.4 appears to update OK, but on rebooting the Router is still on 3004.388.8_4. I have tried several times, using my normal method via my PC browser and via the mobile app. It just won’t update, and just carries on as it was, despite the file upload appearing OK and the update appearing OK. AS I was busy with other stuff and it is working OK I just let it be.

Now I would like to update the Firmware, and so am asking how best to proceed, will a Factory Reset and the reconfiguring it from scratch rather than importing from my backup configuration work? If so should I Factory Reset, then immediately update the Firmware, then configure it to my LAN setup, OR Factory Reset, configure to my LAN setup and then try to update the Firmware to the latest Merlin?

A suggestion if you haven't done so already, use the forum search feature to find the quite numerous other posts of people having similar issues when trying to update to Merlin. There are lots of suggestions in those past discussions/posts. For example just a few of the suggestions offered in the past...
  • If a USB device is attached to the router, disconnect that USB device before attempting to flash the firmware
  • Physically power off the router and leave it sit for 10 minutes then power it on and try to flash the firmware
  • Disconnect all other devices connected to the router, including WiFi devices, and use only one single wired computer to flash the firmware
  • Clear the browser's cache
  • Try using a different web browser
  • Try from a different computer
  • On the computer being used to flash the firmware, temporarily disable any security/antivirus software
  • On the computer being used to flash the firmware, temporarily disable any web browser addons/extensions
  • Perform a hard factory reset on the router, and manually configure it just enough to gain access to the main interface then try to flash the firmware
  • As a very last resort, try using: [Wireless Router] How to use Rescue Mode (Firmware Restoration)?

and via the mobile app

The mobile app may be a mistake...

Do the update hardwired via PC through the GUI.

Edit: if it continues to fail, load most current stock firmware, let it settle, then reload RMerlin and rebuild from scratch.

Thank you. I have searched here and the wider internet, found this is not necessarily an uncommon issue, but no concrete solution.

The attempt via the ASUS Router app was a last ditch attempt. I will go through the suggestions and see how it goes.

The attempt via the ASUS Router app was a last ditch attempt.
Note that on Asus-Merlin firmware, the Asus router app is not officially supported.

If so should I Factory Reset, then immediately update the Firmware, then configure it to my LAN setup, OR Factory Reset, configure to my LAN setup and then try to update the Firmware to the latest Merlin?
It's okay to (also) reset before the update, but what you'll really want to do is perform a hard factory reset AFTER the update, in order to start with fresh defaults from the NEW version of the firmware. I hope this makes sense.
