Neither. Many of the people on this forum will wait to buy a proven, and depreciated model two years later. If you simply must show status to yourself or friends, you would take the cheaper one, saving the difference for your next router upgrade. Good luck choosing

Depends on your needs. They both serve different purposes.

The X4S has been out almost two years, it’s pretty solid unit, the GT-AC5300 is newer but costs almost twics as much, unless you really feel you need the extra 5Ghz band and link aggregation, go for the X4S. The AC86U would be the Asus equivalent to the X4S and it seems pretty decent as well.

X4s vs 86u, 1 vs 3, which one you getting?

I already have two R7800s lol, perks of being a tester ;).

The R7800 has slightly better wireless and the 86U has better storage performance. You'd be fine picking either.

The 7800 is well known so far for its excellent wifi. The RT-AC86U strong point is the Asuswrt software suite with its long list of features (and more on the way, with IPSEC VPN coming in the future), and much better CPU performance if you use USB storage or VPN storage.

SNB 2017 recs:
"If you have an N class router, it's time to upgrade to AC class. This can provide both throughput and range improvement, even with 11g or n devices. See Does An AC Router Improve N Device Performance?
If you have a small area to cover and just a few devices, AC1200 class will suit you fine.
AC1900 class continues to be our go-to router for best combination of price and performance.
If you already have an AC1200 class or higher router, it's unlikely moving up to a 4x4 class router (AC2600 / AC3100) will provide significant performance improvement. See Will A New AC Router Bring You WiFi Joy?
Don't look to MU-MIMO or 160 MHz bandwidth to solve capacity problems. You need devices that also support these features and there are not that many out there.
If you are having a hard time with interference from too many 5 GHz networks, look for routers that support DFS.
If you have a lot of devices and a large area to cover, consider multi-device "mesh" systems instead of AC5300/5400 routers.
If you have tried everything else, still haven't gotten the Wi-Fi you want and price isn't a deciding factor, try NETGEAR's Orbi."
