Asus RT-68u Limited Connection/Stuck Identifying network but only on one PC/network

Hi All,

My laptop is an Asus G75 with an Asus N53 USB adapter and an Asus AC56 USB.

I've had some connection problems with Windows 10 and the AC56 dropping constantly so I decided to revert back to Windows 8 and my old USB adapter (N53) in order to attempt to limit my problems to something that was working fine for me for a long time.

I did a fresh install of Windows 8 using the N53 and it was fine until after the initial batch of updates. My 5Ghz connection is now stuck on Limited using the N53 but the 2.4Ghz connection is just fine. I did some googling and tried the "netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt" and all of the ip/winsock resets I've seen out there (including SNB) but nothing, my 5Ghz connection is still limited.

I tried another fresh reinstall of Windows 8, same thing. I'm ruling out Windows and the USB drivers for the only thing consistent; the router.

Is this because the 68U is remembering my connection and is getting confused/angered/moody? I've tried to remove the set IP in DHCP in case that was it but nothing. Again, the 2.4GHz network is fine but not the 5Ghz and both are being connected by the USB adapter. For fun I tried the AC56 as well, same issue.

Blarg!

You need to update the driver on the N53. ASUS and/or Microsoft do not have a W10 driver for this device. When you upgrade to W10 only the 2.4 band will work after the upgrade.

The work around from ASUS is to download and install the driver for W8.1.

After I did that my N53 works as well in W10 as it did with W7.

The USB-AC56 adapter works fine under Win10 - but you need to remove all the Asus stuff...

Unplug it, go to Add/Remove programs, and uninstall the Asus apps - reboot

Then just plug the USB-AC56 in, Windows will find the correct driver, and you can manage it within Windows...

(quick note - the Realtek driver will prefer 2.4GHz as a default, but go in advanced setting in Windows device manager, and you can set it to 5GHz preferred)

My laptop is an Asus G75 with an Asus N53 USB adapter and an Asus AC56 USB.

FWIW - the G75 is a gamer laptop - any reason why you're not just using the built-in 802.11n adapter? Even then, find a Mini-PCIe upgrade adapter there - the Intel 7260AC is a great one...

USB 11ac adapters will add latency to your game, which might not be preferable...

And if I might ask - my son has a similar unit (G751) running Win8.1 Home, and I've recommended he not upgrade just yet, but follow the Asus ROG forums, as these boxes are fairly tweaked...

Hows the Nvidia action on Win10? I've heard there have been problems...

I'm still ONLY connecting to the 5Ghz server with Limited Connection no matter what USB adapter I use (the N or the AC) but going through the same USB adapter works perfectly fine with 2.4Ghz. This is on Windows 8 atm and not W10, so the Win10 driver isn't the issue.

I could not get that AC56 to stay connected. That's why I went back to 8 and the N53 because I wanted to figure out my wireless issues with a Windows that never gave me problems so I could determine if it was the OS, the USB or the router causing the issue. Until now anyway. The only thing left is the router which I want to throw out the window.

When I got this G75 laptop 3+ years ago the only variant they had on sale was this unit with wireless G, Bluray drive and 12 gigs of ram. I liked the drive and the ram. When I had Windows 10 on this thing Diablo 3 would crash every time I exited with the recent laptop drivers for some reason. I didn't get much further than that because I was stuck with Limited Connection on Windows 10 and I'm still stuck with Limited Connection now, the only thing consistent is the router.

Did you do a rollback from Win10 back to Win8, or a nuke/pave and restore to Win8?

I don't think this is the router, but more the drivers with the internal card and the 2 usb adapters... the Diablo crash might be the nVidia drivers...

What's the internal Wireless Card on that box - Vendor and Model? My recommendation there, since most of them on the G75 series are a/b/g/n (and some with AC) is get that sorted first.. without adding the USB-AC53/USB-AC56

The ROG laptops - they're very tweaked when one buys them, but this is an enthusiast laptop (17 inch, which is a mighty big lap, lol) - general guidance is more focused on the Productivity stuff - e.g. Thinkpads, Inspirons, Latitudes, etc...

Anyways - problems you observed is key reason why I recommended to my 24 year old son, hold off on Win10 for the moment until the drivers catch up

It's an Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter unit. It works alright. I wanted at least wireless N speeds so USB add ons it is. This unit was bought from Tiger Direct and was on sale for a few hundred off. My previously laptop just died a week before so I was in a rush to get one.

I nuked Windows 10 and put on Windows 8 from a formatted drive. I used the same drivers I had back when Windows 8 was my OS (still the latest on the Asus site.) The 5Ghz was working fine until the first batch of Windows Updates it did, since then I've been stuck with limited.

I'd be happy to test out more gaming on this thing with Windows 10 but since my wireless issue followed me from W10->Win8 I want to solve this before trying W10 again. I should mention my desktop PCs works fine with Windows 10. My and my wife's phones and her MBP all connect to either 2.4 or 5Ghz just fine. My RT-68U is running the latest Merlin. I did have to replace my cable modem this week because it was being very intermittent after the weekend.
