Asus RT-AC56U

Francisco

New Around Here
Hello, I may buy a new router soon since I've had my net connection upgraded to 300/300, and it seems my current one is not able to handle the combined bandwidth (600mbps), it barely reaches 400mbps so I thought it was time to change it (and upgrade the wifi as well).

I don't quite have the budget to go after an expensive solution such as the AC87u or similar, however I found a RT-AC56u at a good price. I visited the review this website published few years ago, but I have a few questions about the 'routing performance' tests. I saw it can reach a total simultaneous bandwidth of 1200 mbps, are these tests 'reliable' or are they made under very specific circumstances? I ask this because my current router could handle up to 900+ mbps with 25 nat rules according to the manufacturers website, I'm not even close to that amount of rules and I'm struggling to keep up to speed.

If you need some more details of my net connection, I currently have a FTTH 300/300 with three VLAN (TV, VoIP, net) and my ISP use PPPoE. I'm guessing PPPoE may have an impact in the performance, so I will move to another ISP, same speed, but DHCP and one single VLAN (with no TV).

I hope you can help me, regards.

Got a RT-AC56U i would not go for that router if i was buying today would probly go for the Asus RT-AC87U instead due to it being far better.

  • Mu-Mimo
  • 2333 Mb/s Wifi transfer
  • Better antennas (cause the RT-AC56U can be poor at times on wifi)

What was your previous router? Do you rely on any optional features?

The RT-AC56U with appropriate firmware may very well surpass all your expectations when used in it's base configuration with HW acceleration enabled.

Be wary of flashing any of the latest official firmware (possibly from any manufacturer) as that may limit you from testing different (third party) firmware or even limit you from downgrading to a previous working firmware from the same manufacturer too.

Hello. My previous router was a Mikrotik 951G-2HnD. By the time I bought it, it was one of the few known to be working with multiple VLAN under 802.Q standard or something like that. By the end of the past year Asus added that feature in their firmwares especially for the ISP I was with. My main concern was the routing performance. Of course I wanted to improve the wifi, but that was a given with barely any choice I would make, and it wasn't really my priority (only my phone can work with AC and dual band).

However I woke up yesterday and the first thing I thought was 'frack it I'm leaving my ISP'. So I did. One hour after I called I was already surfing with my new connection, they installed me this device and I no longer need to buy another. I lost some features but most people seem happy with the performance, the wifi seems good too. So, thank you for your advices anyway. Regards.

RT-AC56U will be able to support your speeds. I have 600/600Mbps connection myself and RT-AC56U works just fine. The only problem with the router is abysmal 2.4ghz wifi. I can't squeeze more than 25Mbps down even though there are no other wifi nearby. On the other hand 5ghz is very good :)
