Asus RT-AC66U WAN Disconnects

I have Asus RT-AC66U running Merlin 3.0.0.4.374.33. Connecting PPPoE thru 2Wire 2701C configured as modem only, to Telmex. Getting a lot of disconnects like these:

Nov 27 18:36:24 pppd[329]: No response to 10 echo-requests
Nov 27 18:36:24 pppd[329]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Nov 27 18:36:24 pppd[329]: Connect time 28.6 minutes.
Nov 27 18:36:24 pppd[329]: Sent 105880 bytes, received 268193 bytes.
Nov 27 18:36:31 pppd[329]: Connection terminated.
Nov 27 18:36:31 pppd[329]: Sent PADT
Nov 27 18:36:31 pppd[329]: Modem hangup

I'd appreciate recommendations to further diagnose and/or resolve. I have tried different Router - -> Modem cables, but ..... is "Serial link appears to be disconnected" likely the cause, or an effect?

Sounds like a modem or ISP issue.
