[ASUS RT-AC86U] Cable for Wifi Antenna

cadavor

New Around Here
Hi,

My ASUS RT-AC86U router is placed in a network box and I would like to take out the antennas (about 1 meter) in order to maximize the range of Wifi.

Can this type of cable do the trick?
RP-SMA Female Pin to RP-SMA Male Plug RF Coaxial Extension Jumper Cable LMR195 Cable 50Ohm 1 Meter

Thanks

should be fine
but be aware there will be about 5dB loss in signal only because of cable and additional plug attenuation.

What about the internal 5.0 GHz antenna?

Yeah, but... I would reconsider Plan A and keep the product and warranty intact.
Problem to open it without sights will be the backside sticker with screws under it, at least on 68U thats the problem, otherwiese it could easily be opended unvisible with any old credit card.

Before putting your router in the network box rethink your layout. Put your router somewhere else in your location if you can make your WAN connection there then backfeed from the router to the network box and then use an unmanaged switch in the cabinet to distribute the Ethernet connections. An unmanaged switch at $25 won't cost you much more than the cables and you will end up with much better WiFi coverage.

If you have to have your router in the cabinet then turn off its Wifi or buy a router that doesn't have a built in AP and use it in the cabinet.

One thing to remember is that today's $200+ routers run hot particulary if they have multiple radios and having a router in a cabinet without good cooling or airflow is probably going to shorten its life. On the other hand a small switch puts out much less heat so it is less likely over heat and if it does and has to be replaced you are talking about spending $25.
