Asus RT-AC86U, recommended settings?

DigitalFreedom

New Around Here
Hello!

I am looking for help in setting up my new Asus RT-AC86U router. This is my first router ever, so I guess you can say. I’m newer then a newbie.

The only changes I made so far beyond the stock unit. Are changes to router and network names and passwords, as well as disabling the WPS. Not sure I should have performed this at this point, in regards to the WPS. As I did read a neet feature in one of the Merlin versions of using this as switch for other useful settings.

I’d appreciate greatly what settings I should change beyond that of stock, that are recommended! I have no idea on proper manual firewall settings, or if a firmware institutes this automatically?

I am interested in downloading Merlin, but not sure what version, or how to do it? Can Merlin also be downloaded directly from settings in the router? I do not have a computer at the moment, only accessing via phone browser. I am also not sure if certain version of Asus firmware and Merlin firmware are required before downloading the latest release. But for now, I’d be happy with a Merlin version that’s easy for those whom are just learning the world of networking.

Since my unit is stock and not updated, I don’t think I would need to reset at this point? However should I save the stock firmware, before proceeding? Or does the memory already store this. I did read that resetting, then saving may need to be performed eventually. Considering router can only store so much memory, however my available memory is good!

Much thanks to all who contribute their time freely, to help all of us!

Pardon my post in the wrong section! Should have looked in the Asus wireless section which has very nice posts on all my questions!
