Hello everyone not sure if this the right area for this question so please forgive me.

Currently we have fios internet and it is being switched over to Frontier. Right now i am using the Asus rt-ac87r as the main connection for Fios, i am not using their provided router. Now i am considering to switch to the other broadband provider in my area which is Time Warner Cable. I have never had cable provided internet so i am not sure if i need to have a cable modem? Can the asus router connect directly or does it need a coax cable connection? The reason i am thinking of switching is the poor reviews i have read about Frontier and they have already messed my account up on the transfer.

You will need a cable modem which provides an Ethernet connection to the wan input on the 87r. I would suggest going to the provider website to get a list of approved cable modems.

Thank you for the info. I will go ahead and do some research on cable modems. Still not sure if i will switch. I have no contract right now. I have the Fios 50/50 plan and i can get 100/20 if i switch to cable for less than i am paying right now. I am just a little worried about getting worse service and speed, we do a lot of online gaming and music/video streaming and not sure how cable internet would be.

Thank you

I'm happy with my 100/20 service from comcast. Has been reliable and fast. Does Time Warner charge a monthly lease for using their cable modem? Is so for sure buy your own. Or...if they don't charge but only offer a gateway you might want to consider your own modem as those gateways can be a pain in the butt to switch over to bridge mode so you can use your Asus router with them. If you end up buying a modem check the Arris Surfboard SB6183. It will handle your 100/20 speeds just fine.

Thanks for the info. Yes I was planning on purchasing my own modem. The Arris was the same one I was looking at.

Thank you
