ASUS RT-AX59U to be supported by Merlin?

The RT-AX59U is a MediaTek device.

Can someone clarify/extend this a little please. I assume that "The RT-AX59U is a MediaTek device." means that the RT-AX59U uses Mediatek hardware. Is a consequence of this that asuswrt-merlin simply can't support it?

I am just about to get a fibre connection to my house and one of the ISPs on my shortlist offers the RT-AX59U as a bundled option but if it can't (ever) support asuswrt-merlin then I'll be better off getting a different router.

The developer states in his FAQ that I linked to "It needs to be Broadcom-based". So this is what the developer has chosen to do rather than any inherent technical limitation. Even in the range of Broadcom based routers the developer doesn't have the time to support all of them, only a subset.
