Interestingly enough I made progress on this by turning off the 2.4Ghz network on the master AC86U and leaving it on the 3 AC68U mesh nodes. I picked up another wifi AP so that I could bring up the 2.4 SSID on it to get access to my devices. As soon as I turned off the master's 2.4Ghz radio, all devices became responsive.

Sounds like that router has a bad 2.4 Ghz radio. Possibly it's young enough to get a warrantee replacement.
