Asus RT-N56U Media Server issues

I've bought an Asus RT-N56U last week and I've been struggling to make the Media Server work. I have the latest firmware (not near router atm to check number but Media Server is version 1.0.0.35. I have a WD MyPassport 500 gb HDD hooked to the router and trying to read from it with a Samsung TV and it keeps breaking down :sometimes the folder I've last accessed gets messed up, other times it's the whole drive. I need to take it out every other day and use 'repair' on an Windows machine otherwise the Media Server stops recognizing it (either the whole HDD or just the folder.
