Horrible is hardly the word I would use to describe the wireless performance of the RT-N66U. Though it was better in SDK5 land, I'd rather be as secure and as compatible as possible with all the wireless clients coming out now and in the future.

I remember how a customer showed me how fast a WRT54G was with no security, so long ago. That setup didn't last long as he showed up to his office one day and every printer on his network had printed every sheet it had with various threats, swears and other witty remarks in 72 point font size. Speed is nothing without control.

The john9527 fork is also a possible option right now if you want most of the security fixes with the fastest possible speed too.

It is still weird to me how different the experiences are with the SDK6 firmware (or maybe post .270 firmware).
I do see a slight decrease of signal strenght with SDK6, but for sure not dramatical. The performance seems not affected.
I have skipped firmware releases due to connection issues on 5 GHz, since some time I keep the router updated and now use 3.0.0.4.376.3754.
My location is The Netherlands / Europe.
I can use 2.4 GHz throughout the house, between the router on the lowest floor are 2 concrete floors to the upper level.
2.4 GHz is usable at all levels, 802.11n is the best, 802.11g is fair at the upper level.
5 GHz is excellent at the router floor, fair one floor up, unusable at the upper level.
My RT-N66U is a relative old B1 model.
Are the bad reports also with B1 models, or maybe only with the newer B2 models?
Or is it region specific?

My N66U and N66W are both B1 models and suffer from the SDK6 driver. Funny though the U model will run .270 but the W model won't. I updated both to Merlin's 376.49_5 for now.

Different flash type used by the newer revisions, not supported by 270.
