Asus RT-N66U w/ newest TomatoUSB Shibby ~ irregular performance after two days

Hi All,

I thought my router woes were behind me... I have the newest TomatoUSB Shibby for my Asus RT-N66U. For the past 48 hours, it has been a dream. When doing speed tests at speedtest.net, I have been getting between 50 and 55 mbps down with a perfectly flat and smooth line, even with wireless. My up has been nicely pegged at 10, i.e. I'm getting what I pay for.

Today my internet seemed a bit more sluggish. I fired up the speedtest, and now i'm getting this irregular performance. See screenshot to see how jagged and irregular the line is.

Can anyone give me some guidance here? I'd really like to get this to a "set it and forget it" place, but I'm having a tough time...

And FYI - this is happening over 5ghz, 2.4ghz, and gigE. It's not the wireless.

Could it be your ISP? Try (quickly!) testing with a PC connected directly to the modem.

Frustrating... rebooted the router, and i've tried w/ both QoS + no QoS and I get the same result. Here's the most recent one. If I plug my computer into the modem, it flies.

It does sound like the router then. :(

Just for the sake of a good head to head test, I just five minutes ago did the following:

Unplugged the modem from the router. Turned both off. Waited 30 seconds. Turned on mode. Plugged my MacBook directly into the ethernet of the modem.

pegged at 55mbps down and 11mbps up.

Turned the modem off again for 30 seconds. Powered both the router and modem back on. Waited for the connections to set. Plugged with ethernet directly into the router. pegged at 55mbps down and 11mbps up.

So now i'm back to having rip roarding speeds with the router. I know it wasn't just my ISP as my transfer speeds to my NAS were awful and spiking as well. In any case, I'll just keep watching it. Hopefully this isn't something I need to regularly do...

I actually cleared the NVRAM about 48 hours ago both before and after I flashed to the newest shibby.

And yes - I'm half hungarian :D.

Ok . I will upgrade my f/w from .109 to .110 to see if I get the same problem as you.

Half hungarian - do you speak / talk any hungarian then - myself : both parents from Hungary , born in Sweden.

That's quite nice of you. At the moment, things are running great. I'm about ready to leave for the weekend, and I hope when I return, things are still humming along. We'll see!

I understand about 50% of it (my grandparents spoke hungarian all the time and not very much english), and I speak it like 20%... i.e. not much. Funny how I can eavesdrop on a Hungarian conversation, but I can't say anything back! I guess that's what happens when you just orally / informally learn a language vs. taking a class, understanding the vocab, etc.

It's like that for everybody with languages. My father was born in Jerusalem to Persian parents. Whilst both were impressively multi-lingual the only spoke Persian to each other. Similarly, my father can understand it but not speak it.

FYI - I got home today from my weekend trip, and the first thing I did was a speed test. It was pegged at 50 mbps down / 11 up. Awesome. Then I started surfing the net, moving files around on my NAS, etc. Next thing I know... back to the same old issue of 100 to 500 ms ping times, super spiky performance, and transfer rates of like 5 mbps. Ugh. This router has been such a pain. I just want to 'set it and forget it,' but I'm not having any luck. After I reset the router, it was fast for a while... and now it's back to being slow. Is there something I can show to help shed light on the problem?

I could use my hungarian in Jerusalem when I asked how to get somewhere from ortodox people.

I tried the .110 f/w and had a lot of problems with it. Today I went back to the .109 which I have had no problems with so far. Perhaps you should try the .109 f/w and see if you get better results ?i

Interesting. Just to make sure i don't download the wrong version, do you have a suggested link? I'm assuming flash process is from my 110 build is wipe out NVRAM, load firmware from recovery console, then wipe out NVRAM again? Or because i'm going from tomatousb to tomatousb, can I just load the file like normal from the router homepage? Thanks!

I installed Tomato Firmware 1.28.0000 MIPSR2-109K26 USB AIO 64k from the
Tomato USB web-site. If you want I can PM you the link.
I just the router in recovery mode and used a wired static connection and the Asus Utility recovery without any clearing of the nvram. I could not use the web ui in the tomato usb yo upgrade the f/w from .110 to .109.
Hope this will help you.

Thanks, Mike. I got the file. I'll give it a go when I get home from work later this evening. Have you been problem-free since moving back to 109? Hopefully that is the magic bullet to all of my problems. In case it's not, the Amped Wireless router is on its way from Amazon - hopefully I can just send it back without opening it!

I have had much less problems with the .109 compared to the .110 firmware.
I have to wait a bit longer to see if it is stable.
What Amped Wireless router did you order from Amazon then ?

I ordered the R20000G. I'd much rather have my N66U w/ TomatoUSB, but the reviews of the Amped product are decent, and it seems to have most of the features I Hopefully 109 makes my life better.
