asus with merlin cannot connect to some sites

some sites dont connect

Works for me!

yes, it pings ok, but since ive flashed it i cannot connect from my end
if i use a vpn it connects also

I would look at dns, or dns filtering or country blocking. Are you running any scripts? Using any safe dns? The only difference between your vpn and your wan is likely dns unless you have your client set to accept dns config disabled. Then I don't know.

Try using 138.68.48.110

If that works then it’s your DNS server. Change to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 .

yesterday i went back with original asus and all sites worked ok
merlin issue just a couple of sites.
no scripts. all standard config.

Have you reset to defaults and hand configured back?

I'm running 280.70 on my ac66 with no problems for quite a while very strange , hope you sort it out qickly and itis a simple fix
