AsusWRT-Merlin 380.65_4 issue

Michael Nelson

New Around Here
I was having an issue setting up a VyprVPN connection in an Asus RT-AC87U running Merlin 380.65_4. Every time I uploaded the .ovpn file the screen would flicker . I would lose my login credentials and the "Import .ovpn file" would show "No file selected". I tried starting from factory default. No luck. I tried 380.66_4 beta. No luck. I flashed the latest AsusWRT firmware. After entering the necessary data I was able to connect to the VPN. I then flashed the Merlin 380.65_4 firmware and all was well. I clicked on the VPN Status tab and saw I was connected. I then clicked on the OpenVPN Clients tab. The "Import .ovpn file" indicated "No file selected". So I uploaded the .ovpn file. Once completed the screen flickered and "Import .ovpn file" had reverted to "No file selected" and the "Username" and "Password" were cleared. I re-entered the credentials and clicked apply. I clicked on the VPN Status tab and saw I was connected.

My question is: After uploading a .ovpn file should the .ovpn file name show after the "Browse" button instead of "No file selected"?

A file will be shown only when there is one ready to be uploaded. Once uploaded, that will revert to "no file selected". This is normal.

The import process will clear up the username/password fields because those aren't part of the ovpn file. Uploading an ovpn file wipes out any pre-existing configuration on that client. So it's normal for you to have to enter these information after the ovpn is uploaded.

An uploaded ovpn file isn't used by OpenVPN. Rather, it gets processed by the router, which will fill up all appropriate parameters on that page, and then the file gets discarded. The firmware creates its own config file based on configurations present on the webui.
