Solved AX86U/AX86U Pro Set Up Advice

Currently using AX86U Pro. Sold the AX86U to a neighbor. She made the mistake of calling Asus tech support after her Internet went down and couldn't connect when it came back up. I need to be able to set it up but the last time I tried it screwed up all the IP settings and subnet. I am on ATT gig fiber and their gateway in pass through mode. I have 23 or so wired and wireless devices that don't like being disconnected for long.

So what's the best approach? I do have a laptop in addition to desktop. I need to set this up with minimal downtime without it screwing with my settings. I did factory reset

Factory reset is your first step. A minimal set up should take no more than 10 minutes. Use your laptop connected to a LAN port. Use the old SSID and passphrase but give the router a good admin user and password. Should take you no more than 10 minutes to get it up and running. Then work on things like AiProtection, QOS and custom DNS servers. Leave the LAN at the default of 192.168.50.1. Her clients will get used to that IP range and it makes the next setup easier and quicker. You may want to set the WIFI 5 GHz to 80 MHz no DFS to give her the most stable connection. Total time about 20 minutes but I can do it in 10.

You know the routers and have one... what don't you know to configure the AX86U and wire it back to her gateway?

I used the reset button on the router. It just can't find a DHCP server and IP address

Perform a hard factory reset ([Wireless Router] ASUS router Hard Factory Reset - Method 2) on the router in question then try to access it using a computer connected to the router's LAN port (not WAN port): [Wireless Router] How do I enter my ASUS router's setting page using Web GUI?
Ex: http://192.168.50.1
Ex: http://192.168.1.1
Ex: http://192.168.0.1
Ex: http://www.asusrouter.com

One may have to also manually configure their computer with a fixed IP address in the same IP address subnet range as the Asus router if the computer is auto assigning an incorrect IP address for itself. Make sure the computer is configured for automatic DHCP.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean.

The RT-AX86U defaults to Router Mode after the firmware is Reset/Hard Reset, and includes a DHCP server that assigns IP address to clients on the local network including the router's default IP address of 192.168.50.1.

Maybe the router you gave your neighbor is now defective.

DHCP server comes from Dnsmasq and it's used in almost every home router Asus or other brand. Default configuration after factory reset is always Wireless Router with DHCP enabled. Your issue is around the client you are attempting to configure the router with.

She's back up. Her sister was able to fix it and I'm dying to find out what she did. I've had Asus routers for years and years and understand basic networking. I don't know if they did the full factory reset or what.

Thanks to everyone and I suspect the client, a windows 10 desktop, was the problem but I am waiting to find out.

Take a backup of the settings.
