AdGuardHome AX88U Pro and Merlin 3006.102.4 Beta AGH problem

Aqu

New Around Here
I am experiencing issues with Adguard Home, the DNS completely stops working, and as a result, devices on the network seem to lose internet connectivity—it’s clear why. On the previous stable version 3004.388.8_4 and earlier ones, everything worked properly. In the logs, I see the following error: "[fatal] starting dns server: configuring listeners: listening to tcp socket: listen tcp 0.0.0.0:53: bind: address already in use." and "dnsmasq[73704]: failed to create listening socket for..."

Using AMTM and attempting to access AG (Adguard Home), nothing loads—it’s frozen. I have to manually change the DNS in the WAN settings to a custom one (1.1.1.1) and only then I can quickly access the AG panel and uninstall it to restore DNS functionality.

I have three guest networks with VLANs 52, 53, and 54. What can I do to set up one DNS for all current and future guest networks so that everything works correctly, managed by Adguard Home?

I had the same yesterday when I tried on my ax86u pro. Hopefully fixed soon.

Did you do a factory reset and reconfigure after upgrading the Merlin firmware? Then install the AdGuard Home?

Setting up the router to have the guest WIFI/VLANs use the router for DNS server is not a problem. May be just as easy to set AdGuard as the DNS server in the WAN settings and use DoT to protect your privacy. Even though AdGuard is not in the drop down it still can be added. I ran it for a while but went back to Quad9 for DNS and Diversion with the Stephen Black block list.

No, I didn't perform a factory reset, but I uninstalled and reinstalled AGH via the AMTM menu, and the issue still occurred with a clean configuration. It seems to be something in this latest firmware based on version 3006 that's causing the problem.
I also have an issue with connmon, only after manually initiating a ping does it show that it has any data. But I will need to try reinstalling it again to see if it then loads correctly in the router panel as user2.asp.

I think a lot of addons that interact with dnsmasq are in for a struggle trying to decide how to handle these additional SDN instances. In the case of AGH, it never really had to worry about “extra” dnsmasq instances occupying port 53 until now.

Even mature addons like Diversion will need to decide whether to ignore these extra networks, or offer ad-blocking to them. But duplicating blocking lists in memory across multiple dnsmasq instances could be memory-hungry.

First order of business is for these addons to successfully co-exist alongside the SDN instances…

This thread is not related to the thread you have shared. The OP of that thread has scribe installed, which has compatibility issues with adguardhome. This is only on the new generation router's. It doesn't happen when using scribe on the AC model routers. If you also have scribe installed on one of the newer model routers then it might be related, however I suspect this thread has more to do with the new guest network features. I will have to dig into that more when I get free time away from work. For anyone wanting to read up on the issue with scribe and adguardhome interactions you can check it out here :- https://www.snbforums.com/threads/adguardhome-new-releases-2023.85191/page-14#post-890313 . I am guessing this is impacting all models except the AC models.

There is one quick solution, make adguardhome use a different port than 53 (or maybe set all dnsmasq instances to a unique port , but i dont know). I may have to take this route. That means all traffic will appear like it is coming from the router on the stats page of adguardhome if i cannot resolve the port issue with dnsmasq. No unique client separation. I will have to get back to this later though. My job currently has me traveling.

I hope there is an solution, thanks you for looking into the problem 🙏

I am apprehensive this is not totally related to the new firmware. I am on a legacy firmware from late last year (the most recent before the move to 3006 for the GTAX6000) and I am having the exact same issues. The only solution I have found is to cycle power.
The reports like yours are making me even more wary of upgrading the firmware to the point I am looking to uninstall Adguard for the near term until I can better understand what is driving this.
