Backup Software Question....

Hi all,

I am setting up a BUFFALO LS-V1.0TL 1TB LinkStation Pro LS-VL for a friend's family. I have very little experience with this device or the NOVAbackup software it ships with. I am a WHS guy but he could not go to that expense so the Buffalo seemed a good choice.

We are looking to backup documents, pictures, etc... not system files.

Anywho.... backup software questions -
1. I am dealing the two Windows 7 home premium PCs. Can windows 7 backup directly to a NAS?
2. Is the Novabackup professional software any good?
3. Are their any other solutions you would recommend that would be FREE or inexpensive?

I searched this and have found the information to be "old" with respect to the versions discussed so I thought it would be appropriate to ask again.

Thanks in advance - Tom

Yes, Cobian Backup is good stuff. Can be a bit much for some users to setup, but it is reliable. Only true negative is that there is no automated restore. In the event you need to restore data, you need to do so manually. Its not all that bad/difficult but some users just feel they need an automated restore process.

Also look at Syncback, KLS Backup and Oops Backup. Syncback is the least expensive since a single purchase allows up to 5 PC installs when used in a non commercial application.

Oops Backup is a Timemachine type backup. Some users like the interface and simplistic approach.

You've got a few good options. All the above support Windows VSS so they will copy locked/in use files. Also, all the above are relatively small, efficient apps that won't bog down your PC.

Thanks guys for the recommendations - I will check those out.

Genie Timline looks promising as well - I gets reviewed pretty well at least.
