Hi Folks,
I'm thinking of getting a NAS* and I came across this site while searching the Internet (aka Googling ) for more information.
It seems that when it comes down to choosing one that meets my meagre requirements, there are plenty out there to choose from, which means I'm more confused than I was before I started researching!
Anyway, here are my must have requirements:
1. Can be hooked up with local network, which is basically my laptop connected to a wireless router and the NAS will be connected to the router. I believe that some so called NAS even has problems doing something as basic as this! Could be DHCP address acquisition issues...
2. Must have CIFS/SMB support, so I can 'mount' the NAS as a drive on my laptop running XP (and Vista in the future)
3. Should be reasonably fast so as to I can:
3a) Put my music on it and use a music player (i.e. iTunes) to actually store and access the music files from the mounted drive (note this is not the same as using streaming using DAAP or UPnP, just good old fashioned content access)
3b) Do the same for movies too
3c) Do the same for documents/images too
4. Should have a decent backup solution, I don't mind RAID, but I can live with mirroring on the same drive
5. Should be reasonably quiet... the disk would be placed in a corridor, so unless its a noise machine, I should be happy
Nice to have features:
1. At least two years warranty. If the manufacturer isn't confident, why should be the consumer??
2. Good support and frequent firmware updates to fix critical issues
That's about it really. Now the problem for me is that with requirements like that, everything from Western Digital My Book World Edition to LaCie Ethernet Disk mini to Synology DS107+ to QNAP TS-109 falls into contention. Ohh forgot Buffalo LinkStation Live and D-Link DNS-323 (DNS-321 isn't available in the UK, as we're always behind a bit hehehe...)
Which one do you use and recommend?
Thanks!
