BitTorrent Sync on RT-N66U

Did the world seriously need ANOTHER syncing service?

Well, it's free, fast, and peer to peer. What's not to like? ;)

Your router comes with Asuswebstorage + SmartSync, which integrates right into your router, and is fully supported by Win32, Android and iOS. We also have Skydrive which works very well (I recently configured a three-way sync setup for a customer, and he's very pleased with it).

I just think that this is very much a "me too" service from Bittorrent.

Plus, we may mount any WebDAV clouds (box.com, 4shared.com, yandex.disk and others) and use it as a simple disk right on router.

Also, we may upload\download files from\to SkyDrive or DropBox which is not syncing exactly, but sufficient in most cases.

Sorry to thread hijack, but when looking for an Optware BTSync I came across this conversation and the mention of SkyDrive piqued my interest.

RMerlin, what did you mean by the above? Is there a way of getting my ASUS Merlin powered router to sync my Skydrive? If so that would be AMAZINGLY helpful to me!

No, this was just in response to the first post of this thread that mentionned Bittorrent Sync offering yet another cloud sync service. I was pointing out that there are plenty of such services already, that BT's service seemed to be just another "me too" kind of product. Totally unrelated to Asuswrt.

How ignorant of you to say "yet another cloud sync" service. Yes, it is a syncing service, but it is no 'cloud'. I am having a hard time finding similar syncing services.

By using BitTorrent Sync, you're not saving your files in any cloud server, only on your own hardware devices, this has many advantages. It is an amazing software, I will recommend others to try it.

I wouldn't use the AiCloud & Smart Sync due to potential vulnerabilities, and the fact that hackers are always targeting these kinds router features. With BitTorrent Sync available, my choice is obvious.

What makes you think they're not targeting your current favorite?

What will you choose when yours becomes so popular that it also registers on the hackers radar?

Bittorrent Inc (the company) was recently found to install bitcoin miners with their uTorrent client. Regardless of whether it's opt-in or not, that would still make me leery of their products.

If you sync over the Internet (nodes do need to find one another and to be able establish their P2P sessions afterward), it counts as a cloud-service, regardless of whether it's storing the data or not in the cloud. And if it's entirely done within your LAN... rsync does a pretty good job already.

L&LD, because there are a lot more people using router than BitTorrent Sync, obviously. If security is a higher concern, I won't use BitTorrent Sync either.

It is impossible to fully secure a router, but I can at least do my best to keep possible attack surfaces to the minimum. A compromised router is more troublesome in my opinion.

RMelin, I am aware of, and have read about the μTorrent's cryptocurrency miner when the news just came out.

Instead of avoiding a good software and hope the alternatives didn't do the same, you have the option to fix things yourself.

To make sure there are no hidden Bitcoin miners hogging your idle system resources — Open Task Manager, look for "EpicScale.exe". If you find it, first end the process, then remove it from registry and start-up sequence. Finally, delete the files, they should be located somewhere at "ProgramData" Folder.

If you have set up software restriction policy or application whitelist on your computer, you wouldn't have to worry about this kind of threat. The Bitcoin miner won't be able to install, even if you accidentally let it in, it cannot run.

Or if you have at least configured Outbound on your Windows Firewall, the miner won't be able to call back home.

No more builds for independent linux platforms, only vendor-specific. Also, no more then 10 folders to sync in free version.

Looks like we have to say "Goodbye" to BtSync.

BitTorrent Sync wants Enterprise and more-advanced users to pay for their usage.

For simple home users, 10 Folders is enough to do most things like transfer stuffs and to securely share files with other people. I didn't know about this restriction because I have never hit the limit!

Unless it starts restricting file sizes and transfer speed, then users will really have to look elsewhere.
