New Around Here
Hi Everyone,

I have a Blue Cave where both the wired and wireless connections randomly stops and after 90-120 seconds, the connections come back. When I check the router, the uptime figures do not show that the router rebooted; one of three wired devices (Harmony Control Hub) shows a new DHCP lease; Amazon Echo (wireless) shows a new DHCP lease; all other devices leases are hours old. I check the logs in the web portal and nothing is showing during the interval when the router became unusable.

I have QOS disabled; AIMesh is turned off; router is configured to reboot ever morning at 6 AM; DOS is enabled; ICMP echo from WAN is off; all firewalls are on.

Can anyone provide assistance to debug this issue further?

Ad hoc thought... does it glitch with just one wired client?

Are you using AiProtection features?

OzarkEdge,

Thanks for responding.

Yes, I am using AiProtection features.

It just happened again, in the last hour. This time the DHCP leases for all wired devices are new.

This last time, I was streaming Sling on my AppleTV 4K (wired) and running Windows update on a laptop that hadn't been updated in the last two months. I started to notice that the picture on Sling was becoming degraded and then the router stopped responding and came back to life after 90 seconds.

There is a severe bug on the Blue Cave where the NAT acceleration wasn't working sometime which lead to high CPU usage. This causes high heat production and the Blue Cave have terrible cooling and it overheats easily!

My solution is to use a small 5CM USB fan and put it at the bottom right to cool the router down. Avoid using big fan as you may block the antennas.

I contacted ASUS several times but no reply is received. AiMesh support is also terrible on the Blue Cave. I concluded that Blue Cave is abandoned by ASUS.

If that is the case, then I would punt it. Unlucky.

Thanks guys for the input.

After a year and half with this router doing fairly good, except for a VPN pass through issue introduce by ASUS, I think it might be giving up the ghost.

I have not seen an update for the router firmware since April and am starting to think that it is not important to ASUS anymore. I was afraid something like this would happen. I have had other ASUS routers and always used Merlins firmware, which is not possible on this model.

I am starting to do some research on what to replace it with. It is November here in the US and retail specials will be coming up for Black Friday. If I can combine that with a Best Buy 15% trade in, I will not be too sore that I have to get another router.
