Wouldn't this be great? An instant upgrade to any wireless router

Looks like the only application for this would be IoT devices that need very low bandwidth. The BYU article linked in the Engadget story has a better explanation.

For the devices we actually use in our hands, more range with drastically reduced throughput is not a breakthrough.

Only usable for clients to tell "still here and online" without sending any data at all (yes 1 bit hidden in noise).
Maybe for door lock to say door closed or open, light on or off, postman ringing on the bell and such things.
