Looks like the only application for this would be IoT devices that need very low bandwidth. The BYU article linked in the Engadget story has a better explanation.

Only usable for clients to tell "still here and online" without sending any data at all (yes 1 bit hidden in noise).
Maybe for door lock to say door closed or open, light on or off, postman ringing on the bell and such things.
